This week we celebrate NAIDOC week. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for us all to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On Thursday 30 June we will be hosting a yarn and BBQ with award winning Researcher and Associate Lecturer at the Nulungu Research Institute at the University of Notre Dame Broome Campus, Ms Anna Dwyer.
Anna is a Karajarri woman from Karajarri Country, 190kms south of Broome in the West Kimberley Region of Western Australia. Anna’s professional background is in Education and Linguistics. Anna has been a Cultural Educator and Research Fellow with the Nulungu Research Institute for 13 years. She is currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree by Research through the the School of Arts & Sciences. As Associate Lecturer she has taught in the Indigenous Studies and Diploma of Nursing programs on topics including Relationship to Country, Kinship, Language and Cultural protocols. Anna continues to represent her people through her research on issues of Law and Culture, Health and Climate Change.
Anna will explore the concept of disability from an Indigenous perspective and provide insight into the importance of attachment to land, culture and community life. A particular focus will be place on supporting the ability of Indigenous people to contribute to their families and communities and how this fosters a strong sense of identify and wellbeing.
The presentation will be in two-way conversational yarning style. We encourage you all to have a yarn and share your experiences so we can all learn together. A BBQ lunch will be provided. The event will occur on the lawn area at Far North at the Kimberley Regional Offices in Broome.
